Creating a Virtual Machine in 2005 R2

Short guide to creating a virtual machine in Microsoft virtual server 2005 R2, even with Hyper-V out for some time I am pretty sure some people still use Virtual Server 2005 for their virtualization.

We will assume that you already have a working VS2005 installation and can connect to the web interface. The process is pretty straight forward.

When you open the web interface you are presented with a master status list and a navigation bar

I suggest create fixed size disks to improve performance, if you absolutely need to use dynamic then skip this part. Simply mouse over Create under the virtual disks section of the menu bar. Select Fixed Size VHD

The next page will ask you for disk location/name and size. The default location is available in a drop down. You can add more search paths under server configuration if you want to use a different path.

The next step is to create the actual virtual machine, this can be done by selecting create under the virtual machine section of the navigation bar. Here you can select a name, memory allocation, hdd type/size/location and which network interface to use. You can select dynamic disks here if required. If you need additional network interfaces you can add them once the machine has been created.

Congratulations, the VM you created will now appear on your master list.

And there you go, virtualization ala 2005 😛
